Flanders – A Detectorist and Archaeologist Collaboration

Across many countries, examples are growing of partnerships between archaeologists and detectorists. Leuven, with its history as the site of a Viking defeat by a Frankish king in 891 and its status as a university city since 1425, is an ideal venue to host such an event.

In promoting the event which took place in June 2024, the invitation links to the inaugural conference of the EPFRN: European Public Finds Recording Network, which took place in Brussels two days after the event.

Our Public Day Puts Metal Detection in the Spotlight

We invite you to participate in our Public Day Metal Detection in Leuven. This day is inspired by the congress ‘Hobby archaeology, from citizen science to heritage practice communities’ in Brussels. It will be a day full of fascinating encounters, inspiring conversations, and the sharing of knowledge about our past. Be stimulated by the exhibition ‘Grave hobby: Leisure Archaeology in Flanders’ and strike up a conversation with various exhibitors including the agency Onroerend Ergoed, Detectum vzw, and many other associations and leisure researchers. Whether you are an experienced detectorist, just started, or just interested in history, everyone is welcome!

Coming soon, a short film taken on the day of the event…
